With a history of more than 1,400 years, the festival was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006 and is celebrated widely among the Tibetan and Tu ethnic minority communities in Tongren. The event features traditional dances including Lashize (god dances), Leshize (dragon dances), Moheze (military dances) as well as village temple rituals. Visitors and photographers captured the performances on their phones, while some livestreamed the event. A 71-year-old performer said the festival had preserved its original character, and had attracted more tourists. Elisabeth, an Italian visitor on her first trip to Qinghai, called it a unique ethnic carnival and said she hoped to return. Since 2025, Tongren has launched its tourism brand as the “World Thang-ga Art Capital” to introduce a model combining performances with activities held in the original villages.
